The HoneyMooners, Donald Trump And
Your Own Reality TV Show On The Internet!
Remember how your grandparents talked
about television shows like The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy and DragNet? Despite
the fact that they couldn’t rate next to the computer generated fare of today,
your grandfather, grandmother and millions of others recall them fondly.
Compared to the quality of video
programming today (I’m talking about TECHNICAL quality, here) these shows were
dinosaurs: shot in black and white, poor sound, poor special effects, limited
sets etc. Yet, at the time, they were the hottest thing going and a person would
have to be crazy to miss an episode! Even now, fifty years later, copies
of the full seasons for many of those old programs are still making money for
the studios who have secured reproduction rights.
Why would
America embrace the concept of television so enthusiastically when it really
left a lot to be desired?
Let’s look at some underlying
principles, see if we can learn something and, more importantly, apply them to
where we are now on the internet (and see if we can make some money!)
First of all, let’s go back to the
Roaring Twenties and the Dirty Thirties. There was no lack of anything to read.
Newspapers and magazines dotted the landscape and novels were the toast of the
town. If you wanted information, current events, entertainment or an education,
the most accepted way to get it was through READING.
Soon, however, American families
started turning away from the idea of an evening of reading and tuning into the
RADIO. Here was a device, although initially somewhat difficult to use, that
could give you the information that you were looking for INSTANTLY. The weather!
Current Events! The voice of the President! Even entertainment!
But even
better than the ‘new’ and ‘instant’ aspects of this medium was the fact that for
the first time in history, one could HEAR the voice of another human being
delivering all that information.
For that reason alone first thousands,
then millions of people started tuning in regularly, making the radio their
primary source of information.
Imagine the excitement, then, when
America learned that soon they would be able, not only to HEAR their favorite
newscasters, but to SEE them as well! The opportunity to actually watch the
popular celebrities that so far had been confined to pictures in magazines and
clips in movie theatre newsreels was overwhelming! Finally, from the comfort of
the living room, America could ENGAGE with human beings on the other side of the
country and a fantasy world away!
What does
this mean for us today?
For starters, it’s a reminder that the
‘old stuff’ isn’t all that bad (my favorite is Jack Benny). Secondly, it’s a
trend that the smart ones among us can take from the offline world and apply it
directly to the online world.
Let’s assume that the internet (the
online world) is a microcosm of the offline world. There are many similarities.
Firstly, if you wanted to use the internet, all that you had initially was text
to read (of course, there were also pictures!). Gradually, sites started
developing recorded greetings so that as soon as you brought them up or clicked
on a link, you would hear a person’s voice welcoming you and encouraging you to
take a certain course of action. Research reveals that people are more likely to
make a decision due to an audio cue than to a text cue only.
So now we have gone (in the online
world) from text to audio. Guess what’s next? (This shouldn’t be hard.)
That’s
right! The next big thing for the Internet is utilizing the concept of
streaming video!
How can we be sure? Not only was it
first true in the offline world, but if you need more reassurance, take a look
at broadcasters and what they are doing online. I believe that ‘Welcome Back
Kotter’ is the first syndicated series to be available for DOWNLOADING off of
the internet. Also, shows such as the cancelled ‘Book of Daniel’ were
available for fans to watch when they logged on (an excellent example of
niche programming !). There is definitely a huge segment of the population
ready to watch video on the net-and the numbers are growing!!
If we want
to capture our elusive markets for our home-based businesses (even if they are
our target markets, they are still elusive) we have to engage them.
They must make eye ‘contact’ with us.
They must see us in our own environment, watch our gestures, see us smile in
order to take the action we want them to take (kind of like reality tv, I
guess)
In short, streaming video on
our sites will help us to ENGAGE our market, EMPHASIZE A POINT using a physical
prop and MOTIVATE LOYALTY from our market. We will be more memorable to our
market because when they see us with their eyes, they will see us in their
minds.
And someday, when they are surrounded
by their grandchildren, they’ll say: ‘I remember back in the early two
thousands, I was on the internet and I saw this guy interview Donald Trump,
the wealthiest man in the world, on his website”

assisting small and mid-tier sized
businesses grow exponentially. We have
been in business for over 20 years and
are considered a leading marketing firm
with over $ 1.2 billion dollars in
increased revenue at higher profits, for
our small and mid-tier clients in just
the last 6 years.
I have hired hundreds
of consultants and have yet to meet
anyone of the caliber like Glenn
Dietzel.
I have known and
worked with Glenn Dietzel for quite some
time now and I am always amazed as his
ability to be able to take abstract and
complex ideas, concepts or problems and
almost instantaneously process them into
clear and concise actions plans. This is
a rare gift and an artful skill not
found by too many marketing
professionals, anywhere in this country.
What also impressed
me about working with Glenn is his
amazing razor sharp ability to
communicate and connect with people. In
this busy world of ours, effective and
powerful communication is the key to
success and Glenn is truly the expert,
demonstrating his unsurpassed mastery in
both his copywriting skills and his
speaking ability.
Anyone considering
hiring Glenn for his workshops or one on
one consulting does not need to look any
further as I would say it this way…”the
path to the master is always known in
your heart…” If you ever meet Glenn,
you will know what I know about him.
He is a man of his
word, his integrity is impeccable and I
can unequivocally endorse anything he
does. If you have to question yourself
if you should hire him or be concerned
about his fees for attending one of his
programs, you may not be qualified to
work with him. As someone once said
“He’s priceless”
My best to you…."
